Live from Kathmandu: Last finals!

Dirty Faced Siberian Husky art

Oslo is the first ever Dirty Faced Siberian Husky to become a Danger Dog.  Sagar had a lot of fun with this last minute order.

Dirty Faced Siberian Husky art
As did Megh Raj in this hand painted portrait of Oslo.   I had never heard of a 'Dirty Faced Siberian' but apparently Oslo is a fine example.   This breed is also known as 'dark-faced'.

Folk art Cats hand painted on metal

Cardamom and Bergamot are a pair of cat friends enjoying their spotlight in their portrait by Sagar Bitsa.

Folk art Cats hand painted on metal
Megh Raj also painted this pair of pretty cats.

Folk art cats hand painted on metal
Sufraj Khadka weighs in with a decidedly folk art version of these two cats.

Folk art Chocolate Lab hand painted on metal
Rudy the Labrador is stunning in this portrait by Sagar, done in a traditional Danger Dog style.

Folk art Chocolate Lab hand painted on metal
Megh Raj seems to make the dogs younger.   Rudy looks like a young pup in this one.

Folk art Chocolate Lab hand painted on metal
Sanjib Rana painted Rudy in a masterly fashion.   Sanjib is the only one of my artists that uses acrylic, by the way.   All the other use enamel.

Folk art Basenji hand painted on metal
Nayru is a charming Basenji, here hand painted on metal by Suf Khadka.

Folk art Basenji hand painted on metal
Megh Raj makes Nayru glow in this intense portrait of a Basenji.

Folk art Basenji hand painted on metal
Sagar is last but never least in this vibrant version of Nayru the Basenji.  Sagar included a shadowy figure of a lady in this one.

These portraits are much better in person without the glare.   I love my new hotel room in Boudha, but space for good photography is hard to find.

Time has run out if you would like to order for this trip.   Next trip is tentatively scheduled for the end of October, 2013, returning the first week in December, 2013.

Let's keep these artists painting.

Live from Kathmandu: A Menagerie

Folk art African Wart Hog hand painted on metal
The first ever Danger Hog!   Sagar and his apprentice Paras were both fascinated with this African Wart Hog.   This 'beauty' lives at a Safari Park in Southern California and certainly has his chops!

There has been a Danger Pig previously (Miss Piggy), but this is definitely a first.   Thanks to Peter Weibel for the photo.

Folk art Cow hand painted on metal

Folk art Cow hand painted on metal
The tags were of great interest to the artists.   This Holy Cow (aka #93) has a tag that has a slow release medicine protecting her from insects and ticks.  By Sagar.

Folk art Cow hand painted on metal
Finally we have a 'Happy Cow' version by Sanjib Rana.

Folk art horse hand painted on metal
French Quarter is an elegant horse and Sagar has done her justice with his fine detail.   He liked the bridle as well.

Folk art Zen Cat hand painted on metal
Blackie the Black Zen Cat lazes on her tiger rug, as painted by Suf Khadka.

Danger Dog from Burma hand painted on metal
Rocky is the very first Danger Dog from Burma.   I did not see many 'Beware of the Dog' signs while in Myanmar, earlier this trip, and signboard artists were few and far between.   Sagar managed to complete his portrait of Rocky copying Burmese script.

Native Beware of Dog sign hand painted on metal
I came across this rather new Beware of Dog sign while walking in Kathmandu.   This is very typical for a native Nepali warning sign.   The figure is a version of a common stencil used here for these signboards.   The circle behind the head motif is a classic.

Time has run out if you would like to order for this trip.   Next trip is tentatively scheduled for the end of October, 2013, returning the first week in December, 2013.

Live from Kathmandu: The final days

The final Danger Dogs and Cats are slowly arriving and filling up every space in my Kathmandu kitchen.

Beware of Cat folk art from Nepal
Quilty by Suf and Sagar, Tigger by Megh Raj and Lily by Shahi and Sagar fill a quiet corner.

Folk art Mastiff and Folk Art Black Lab
Max the Mastiff (by Punam) and Maggie the Chocolate Lab (by Sanjib) face off in the corner.

Folk art Chiweenie - half Chihuahua & half Dachshund
Jackal the Chiweenie (by Sagar, Jit Gurung and Megh Raj) hold court over my husband's shoes.

Bo the Nepali Jungle Cat
This is Bo, a very large Danger Cat, approximately 32 pounds.   He was found as an orphaned kitten up in the mountains of Nepal and was brought to the care of a local nurse, where he has resided ever since.

Bo the Jungle Cat relaxing on the roof top in Kathmandu
He is enjoying his moment in the sun.   Bo is a Nepali Jungle Cat but he is a big pussycat to me.

Live from Kathmandu: Sagar's Studio

It is getting down to the wire here and Sagar is busy putting on the finishing touches of his last batch of Danger Dogs.

IMG_8090
Jackal, the Chiweenie (Chihuahua/Dachshund cross), is adorable in this final by Sagar.   He is truly a classic Danger Dog with his aggressive stance and teeth as he stands guard on his green turf.

IMG_8092
Ringo the handsome young Golden Retriever is in a big circle, a common Nepali Danger Dog motif.

IMG_8091
Tigger the Tabby Cat is still awaiting her final details by Sagar.   Here she is in a sea of orange.

IMG_8087
Rocky the first Burmese Danger Dog by Sagar.   I know, I know, it was supposed to have been painted in Myanmar, but I could only find two signboard artist willing and able to paint Rocky.   Signboards are truly a lost art in Myanmar.

Live from Kathmandu: Pilgrims bookstore is no more

Thursday night the famed Pilgrim's bookstore burned in a conflagration that took Kathmandu firefighters over 12 hours to douse.

IMG_7812
The Nepali newspapers report various causes and, of course, the rumors are flying.  Luckily, there were no fatalities, although a few firefighters were injured.

IMG_7814
Burnt books are strewn across the shop.

IMG_7813
It is a sad loss, as Pilgrim's Book Shop has been a Kathmandu tradition for over 30 years.

Pilgrim's Books in Kathmandu burned
Even a pre-monsoon rainstorm did not keep curious bystanders away from the devastation as they crowded the streets of Thamel.   I did notice that the clean up crew was not using gloves or any other safety devices as they quickly cleaned the surrounding restaurants and shops of debris.

IMG_7815
Hopefully not too many rare and out of print books were at the burnt location, but nevertheless, a Thamel treasure was lost.

UPDATE:    The workers are busily combing the ruins of Pilgrims Bookstore and it is indeed a grim sight.

Burnt books make a shrine in front of Pilgrims Bookstore
Passersby look at the gems that have partially survived.   There is a sign mentioning that these books are not for sale.

Remnants of Pilgrims Bookstore fire
This charred statue is a reminder of what has been lost.

Pilgrims will surely be missed.
