Anatomy of a Danger Dog: Lily the Pomeranian by Megh Raj Thapa

Folk art Pomeraniam
Lily the Pomeranian by Megh Raj

This is the first drawing of Lily the Pomeranian by Megh Raj Thapa.

Now you can see that Megh Raj has added more detail to his portrait of Lily the Pomeranian.

Lily.Pomeranian.MeghRaj
Lily the Pomeranian as a final portrait

The final portrait of this pretty Pomeranian includes her sweater.   The original photo was of Lily in the snow and Megh Raj decided not to leave her out in the cold.

Folk art Pomeranian
Lily the Pomeranian and her final three

Lily turned out great in all three of her portraits.   Megh Raj was the only artist not to leave her to her snowy pursuits.   Her final three are by Megh Raj, Sagar Bitsa and Nara (clockwise from top left).

Anatomy of a Danger Dog: Mochi the Papillion by Sagar

It is fascinating to watch an artist's process.   Layer after layer is necessary to reach the final portrait.  This is the first in a series of how a Danger Dog is born...   Sagar Bitsa is today's featured artist.   Mochi is the featured dog.

Folk art Mochi the Papillon
First layer of Sagar's portrait of Mochi the Papillion.
Folk Art Papillion
Mochi by Sagar a little farther along
Sagar is unusual in that he does his background before the figure is completed.

Folk art Papillion
Mochi even farther still (by Sagar)

Mochi still does not have his eye-light.  I find it a little unnerving, and often do not show these works in progress until they have the eyes.    Sagar leaves the eye lights until the last...   Mochi's portrait looks very impressionistic at this stage.

Sagar did a great job, and it was fun to follow Mochi's progress.

Turns out that Mochi's owner chose the portrait painted by Nara (above upper right with the dark blue background).

Mochi by Sagar is still available, as is Mochi's exuberantly fine portrait by Dilip (upper left).

Stay tuned for more in the Anatomy of a Danger Dog series.

Have a great holiday season.

Kathmandu woman with Cocker Spaniel puppy
My friend with her 3-month old Cocker Spaniel puppy

This puppy, named Dash, is so smart that he already knows the command for sit at his young age.   My friend holds him still in her lap and says that it is 'good boy time'.

I must apologise for the quality of the photos.   Often there is no electricity here and finding a place to shoot without glare is almost impossible.

I will be sending individual photos as well as a triple shot (for comparison) when I get back to California this weekend.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

At this time, I can no longer accept orders for this trip.   Please send me photos for spring/summer trip in 2014.

Orders no longer being accepted for the November 2013 trip.  I will be back in early December 2013 in plenty of time to mail holiday orders.

1. Please send me a photo of your pet.  I will give it to three different artists, giving you a choice of 3 paintings and three people will get work.   Each painting is about one square foot and is on metal with synthetic enamel paint.   These can be hung indoors or out.

2. Let me know what you would like it to say.

3. Let me know what style of portrait you would prefer:   naive, realistic, colorful, etc.

4. Tell me your pet's name and breed.

5. Send your photo to me at:   ampage1@gmail.com
That's it !

Satisfaction is guaranteed as I accept no money up front.   If you do not like one of the three, you pay nothing, and the 3 artists are paid in full in any case.   Let me know what you want it to say and that's it!

The cost is $250 plus shipping.   Shipping is around $18 per sign (to and from the US).   And 9.75% California sales tax for California residents.
Pay after choosing your portrait.
Multiple pets on one sign cost more ($325 for Double, $400 for Triple).

Let's keep these artists painting.

This hand-painted art form is fast disappearing in Kathmandu, as it already has in most parts of the world.   I pay fair trade wages, the artists get to paint again, pet lovers get a choice of three paintings for each commission, and I get to help Nepali artists make a living.   Everybody is happy.   Rescue dogs from America get to rescue artists from Nepal!

Folk art Australian Shepherd

Lars the Labradoodle is a happy chap in his three portraits.

Folk art Patindale Terrier
Tiny the Patindale Terrier times three...

I had never heard of a Patindale Terrier before, but Tiny looks like a fine example.  She is also part Staffie and all adorable.

Folk art Grey Poodle
Spartacus the Poodle (Poodel?)

Spartacus (aka Sparky) is also adorable in his portraits by Megh Raj, Sagar and Indra Lama.   It is a good thing that Megh Raj can paint better than he can spell!

Folk art Bodhi Dog
Bodhi the Enlightened Dog

Bodhi is beautiful in these final three portraits by Sanjib Rana, Sagar Bitsa and Megh Raj Thapa (clockwise from top left).

The script here is in Tibetan and translates as 'Om mani padme om'.

Folk art Bulldog
Patsy the Bulldog in three different guises

Patsy could not be more different in her three portraits.   By Indra, Sagar and Dilip (clockwise from top left), they play with size and form.   Indra was so excited when I gave him the photo.   He said "Bulldog!"  These artists really like dogs, and it shows.

Folk art Poodle
Freddie the Strange Black Standard Poodle.

I don't know why Freddie is strange, but he is happy on his quilt.   All three artists - Nara, Sagar and Sanjib (clockwise from top left) chose to feature that quilt.

Folk art White Standard Poodle
Bowie the Odd Standard Poodle

Bowie is an elegant white Standard poodle, here hand painted by Nara, Sanjib and Sagar.

Folk art Pomeranian in the snow
Lily the Pomeranian in the snow

Who could resist a Pomeranian in the snow?  Lily is painted by Sagar, Nara and Megh Raj (clockwise from top left).

There are some hard choices here.   I can't wait to hear what you think!
