Live from Kathmandu: Works in progress from Megh Raj

Megh Raj has continued to amaze me with his soulful portraits.   Today you are in for a treat.

Chester the Foxhound and Cooper his Beagle buddy are brought to life in this latest work in progress from Megh Raj Thapa.

Folk art portrait of a long-haired cat hand painted on metal in Nepal
Brian Wilson the long-haired Cat by Megh Raj

Brian Wilson, who must have a harmonious purr, is just plain beautiful in his work in progress by Megh Raj Thapa.   His fur is long-haired and lustrous.

Folk art portrait of a Springer mix dog hand painted on metal in Nepal
Copper the Rescue dog hand painted by Megh Raj

Cooper, a charming Springer Spaniel mix, is relaxing in this work in progress by Megh Raj.   It is nice to see the palette that Megh Raj uses to paint his portraits but that will be painted over in the final version.

Folk art portrait of a Chesapeake Bay Retriever hand painted on metal in Nepal
Pancho the Chesapeake Bay Retriever by Megh Raj

Pancho the Chesapeake Bay Retriever is very handsome in his early portrait by Megh Raj, again, his paint palette will disappear in his final portrait.

Folk art portrait of a woman by a sign board artist in Nepal
Helen by Megh Raj Thapa

Something different!  The lovely Helen's completed portrait will include a backdrop of the Himalayas.  When doing a portrait of a human, I only do one commission and I chose Megh Raj to paint Helen, as he is the most consistently photo-realistic artist.   Choice lettering to come!

Folk art portrait of a Dachshund wading hand painted on metal in Nepal
Elsa the Dachshund by Megh Raj

Elsa the Dachshund is walking in deep grass, soon to be added by Megh Raj.  Such a pretty Dachshund.

Folk art portrait of a rescue dog hand painted on metal in Nepal
Tiffy by Megh Raj

Tiffy the Rescue Dog in a work in progress by Megh Raj Thapa.   Megh Raj is particularly good with anatomy.   I look forward to seeing the finals soon!

Beware of Dog signs hand painted on metal were common in Kathmandu and throughout Nepal only a few years ago.     Hand painted metal signs of all types abounded whether they were beauty shop signs, auto detailing, food stalls or butcher shops.  They have all but disappeared and have been replaced by digital photos on a plastic that they call flex here.   The Danger Dog fair trade art project is the only one that they are still hand painting for.

Thank you to all of those who have ordered their pets immortalized over the years...

Stay tuned.   More adventures in Nepal are sure to follow, along with more finals and works in progress...

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I am in Nepal right now and accepting orders.

Now is the time to order:   Be ahead of the Pack!   Orders now being accepted for the October 2016 trip.  I will be back in early December 2016 in plenty of time to mail holiday orders.

1. Please send me a photo of your pet.  I will give it to three different artists, giving you a choice of 3 paintings and three people will get work.   Each painting is about one square foot and is on metal with synthetic enamel paint.   These can be hung indoors or out.

2. Let me know what you would like it to say.

3. Let me know what style of portrait you would prefer:   naive, realistic, colorful, etc.

4. Tell me your pet's name and breed.

5. Send your photo to me at:   ampage1@gmail.com
That's it !

Satisfaction is guaranteed as I accept no money up front.   If you do not like one of the three, you pay nothing, and the 3 artists are paid in full in any case.   Let me know what you want it to say and that's it!

The cost is $250 plus shipping.   Shipping is around $18 per sign (to and from the US).   And 9.75% California sales tax for California residents.
Pay after choosing your portrait.
Multiple pets on one sign cost more ($325 for Double, $400 for Triple).

Let's keep these artists painting.

This hand-painted art form is fast disappearing in Kathmandu, as it already has in most parts of the world.   I pay fair trade wages, the artists get to paint again, pet lovers get a choice of three paintings for each commission, and I get to help Nepali artists make a living.   Everybody is happy.   Rescue dogs from America get to rescue artists from Nepal!

Megh Raj Thapa enjoys his cup of tea while I admire Bleu the German Short Haired Pointer in her work in progress from Megh Raj.

Tiffy the Rescue Dog by Sagar

Here is a VERY early line drawing from Sagar of the beloved Tiffy, a rescue dog.

Live from Kathmandu: Line drawings from Sagar Part 1

Sagar Bitsa has just started these Danger Dog portraits and it is fun to see these very early works in progress. Each artist works differently, I have noticed, and Sagar works on many at once. He has his day of line drawing, then light background colors, then he fills in the figure.

Live from Kathmandu: Finals from Sanjib Rana

Sanjib Rana has brought me 6 almost finished Danger Dog portraits.   He does not do lettering, so they are not totally complete.

But his art is breathtaking.  Sanjib is the only one of the Danger Dog artists that uses acrylic paint instead of enamel sign paint.   He also likes a rectangular format rather than the standard 12"x12".   These portraits are 12"x15".

Folk art portrait of a German Short-haired Pointer hand painted on metal in Nepal
Bleu the Water Dog by Sanjib Rana

First up is Bleu, a German Short-haired Pointer that loved the water.   Sanjib just did a wonderful job with those waves!   And that dog!

Folk art portrait of a King Cavalier Spaniel hand painted on metal in Nepal
Harry the King Cavalier Spaniel by Sanjib Rana

Harry the King Cavalier Spaniel will be a Perfect Danger Dog when he gets his lettering.   As hand painted by Sanjib Rana, this little guy does look perfect!

Folk art portrait of a Schnoodle against the backdrop of the Himalayas, hand painted on metal in Nepal
Henry the Schnoodle by Sanjib Rana

Henry the Schnoodle is painted in the Himalayan Mountains in his first portrait by Sanjib Rana.

Because of the way that Henry is photographed looking up at the camera, Sanjib was concerned about how to get those requested mountains in there...   Looks like he succeeded.

Folk art portrait of a Springer Spaniel hand painted on metal in Nepal
Joe Slovo the Springer Spaniel by Sanjib Rana

Joe Slovo is a black and white Springer Spaniel with some beautiful polka dotted spots on his nose.   This portrait, along with most of the others from today is still awaiting lettering.

Artist signing his hand painted art in Kathmandu
Sanjib Rana signs Herschel's portrait

Sanjib kindly met me in a Cafe in Boudha where he signed his works and enjoyed a Cappachino.

Folk art portrait of a Pappilion and Terrier mix hand painted on metal in Nepal
Rescue dog Chance and his final portrait by Sanjib Rana

Chance in his portrait by Sanjib Rana is complete.  Chance's patron did not want any lettering!

Folk art portrait of a Black Standard Poodle hand painted on metal in Nepal
Herschel the Black Standard Poodle by Sanjib Rana

Herschel the Black Standard Poodle is looking good in his almost- final by Sanjib Rana.

If you would NOT like any lettering on any of these 6 portraits, please let me know asap, so it is not too late!!

Stay tuned.   More adventures in Nepal are sure to follow along with plenty of finals and works in progressll
