Live from Kathmandu: Works in Progress from Sagar Bitsa

 Sagar surprised me this evening!  He sent works in progress showing actual progress!  Sagar paints his backgrounds first and then the dog or cat. He sent this last week, and I had a hard time figuring out which dog or cat was which.  But we all agree that he has a nice view from his rooftop.

It is always interesting to see how a painting progresses and it was good of Sagar to send two versions.

Leo the Dalmatian Dog as a Work in Progress by Sagar

 Leo, a very handsome Dalmatian pup, is well on his way in this diptych.  I think it is close to being finished, but still needs lettering, as do all others in this post.

Another beautiful Dalmatian, Anya's lovely profile is front and off-center.

 Over the years, when asked to do a portrait of a human alongside their pets, Sagar is my go to artist.  He enjoys the challenge and has not let me down.  Here we have Bess and her beloved Ginger Cat Hamilton.

Beignet the Ranch Dog by Sagar as a work in progress

Beignet is a very lucky dog who has the run of a ranch.  I can't wait to see this one in its final incarnation. 

Ancho Toy Poodle by Sagar as a work in progress

 The adorable Ancho.  To me, this reminiscent of Magritte's Bowler Hat paintings. I love the way that Ancho is floating.  Perhaps a green apple overhead?

Jacs the Jack Russell Terrier by Sagar as a work in progress

 Jacs is a later addition and therefore an earlier work in progress.  This Jack Russell has plenty of personality is his photo.

Lusso the Italian Greyhound by Sagar as a work in progress

 Lusso the Italian Greyhound is so elegant and someone is going to have a hard time deciding on this one.

Opie's portrait is going to be dramatic in his golden circle.  Can't wait!

I love seeing the progress in Buni's shaggy coat.  Another very hard choice ahead.

Sam, a sweet Yorkie pup, glows in his circle of fire.  

Sojho the Nepali Dog by Sagar as a work in progress

Sojho, a Nepali dog that charmed his Dog-ma, returns to his roots in the Himalayas.  The red spot on his forehead is a tikka, given as a blessing.

Ranger A Pit Bull Mix by Sagar as a work in progress

Ranger is a beautiful Pit Bull that has recently passed.  Obviously she was a beautiful dog that was well loved.  And she was also photogenic with that big smile.

Sagar means 'Ocean' in Nepali and he has placed Ranger in front of his namesake.  I do not think he has ever seen the ocean as Nepal is landlocked.

Dilip was running late on his lettering when I arrived to pick up.  He and his family are going to their home village tomorrow in order to vote in the Nepali elections.   So he was in a rush.

Orfeo the Xolo, looks like a fawn but is a Xoloitzcuintli (pronounced “show-low-eats-QUEENT-lee”) dog, a 3000 year old hairless breed from Mexico.  Dilip, a huge dog lover, was fascinated.

Now Dilip and his family can go off and vote and the paintings will be fully dry for pick up in a week.  I looked it up, his home village is a full 8-hour drive in normal times.  And traffic is worse as everyone is headed home for the elections.   I like that he is doing his civic duty!

Live from Kathmandu: Finals from Shree Lamachhain and Jit Gurung

New finals from 2 artists in Pokhara, Nepal.  Shree Lamachhain took a 10-year break to 'go out' to South Korea, working to support his family.   He has come back and is painting again!

Pumpkin the Pomeranian by Shree

Pumpkin, a pretty red-haired Pomeranian, has a pretty smile and a bright background. Shree always adds a paintbrush beneath his signature.  

Double Poodles by Shree

These 2 Black Doodle friends, Sophie and Oliver, enjoy their time in the grass.  Shree has often placed his dogs in a green Eden, and this photo inspires that green Valhalla.

Sam, a handsome young Yorkie, is happy on his red plaid cushion.  

Mabel By Shree

 Mabel's strength and grace is captured perfectly in Shree's portrait.  He took a strong photo and blew it out of the park.   I love the whiskers, the direct look in her eyes.  Look at how Shree transformed the background of pastels into his own version of a pastel rainbow.

Buni the Shaggy Dog by Jit Gurung

Jit Gurung's rendering of Buni, an obviously Enlightened Dog.  As you will see, Buni is also a Pastry Chef.   One of the things that is special with Jit's art is that the brushstrokes in his paintings have a texture that you can both see and feel.

Again, Jit has a masterful hand with Buni's quite striking hair.  I think Jit had fun with this one.

Chairman Meow by Jit Gurung

In this portrait of the Chairman Meow, Jit's brushstrokes are not flat.  Looking at the painting obliquely, you can see and feel his brushstrokes.  The Nepali lettering translates to "Meow".

 The always magnificent Orfeo, a Xolo, in his second portrait by Jit Gurung.   The artists love this unusual dog.

Sanjib Rana is a very talented artist whose work keeps getting better and more interesting every year.  

Opie the Catahoula Pit Bull mix by Sanjib Rana

Opie, a Catahoula Leopard/ Pit Bull mix with striking blue eyes and lovely markings, is wrapped in a magenta blanket.  Sanjib did a great job in capturing his exotic beauty.   Lettering still to come in all of these portraits by Sanjib.

Orfeo the Xolo by Sanjib Rana

Orfeo is a Xoloitzcuitli dog, (pronounced “show-low-eats-QUEENT-lee”) is a 3000 year old breed from Mexico, considered by the Aztecs (and modern owners) to be alert, loyal and a vigilant watchdog.  Sanjib's first reaction to seeing this photo was that Orfeo looked like a deer.  All 3 of the artists that received this photo were fascinated by his unusual beauty.

This is the first work in progress that I have seen of this pretty pup.  Anya, a spectacular Dalmatian Dog rules the pool in Sanjib's portrait.  Again, still awaiting lettering.

Lusso the Italian Greyhound by Sanjib Rana

Lusso is a luminous and elegant Italian Greyhound.  This first portrait by Sanjib is still awaiting lettering.  The photo that Sanjib had to work made his job easier and Sanjib did a great job.  Traditional Beware of Dog art in Nepal often featured a circle motif and this works for me.

Q Work In Progress by Sanjib Rana

This is the second work in progress that I have seen of Q, a well-loved dog recently departed.  This is a good tribute to a handsome dog.

Leo the Dalmatian is simply awaiting the addition of his name to his portrait.  Leo looks wonderful with his bright red backdrop added by Sanjib.

This trio of lucky Dalmatians are hot on the trail in this portrait by Sanjib Rana.   Leo, Katia and Anya will have their names added to this painting.

Buni, an Enlightened Dog, relaxes in elegant settings in this portrait by Sanjib.

The artists are sending these photos digitally via Facebook who compresses the images.  Therefore they are small, but I promise to send high resolution images when I see the artworks in person.   If anyone would like to not have lettering added to Sanjib's work, that can be arranged for one more day or two.   Let me know asap.
